You +TECHNOLOGY – 18 March 2010

The Future of Digital You, the fourth in our series of +TECHNOLOGY events, took place on 18 March.   Over 50 guests attended and were largely from the mobile, technology, retail and advertising sectors.  The event gave them a valuable opportunity to consider current trends and to debate the future of location-based services and online data, as well as looking at opportunities for investment and identifying the legal issues to be navigated in exploiting these.

Guest speaker Alan Moore of SMLXL looked closely at the definition of ‘location’, saying “it’s sometimes necessary to think the unthinkable”. He gave examples of where location-based services had been used to empower and enable people: in Rwanda and Nigeria a scheme called Text Eagle has been developed whereby people get paid by text for doing a local job. He also discussed a key theme of data ownership - an issue which is likely to become more prevalent over the next year.

Using the phrase “search economy”, he said how we have all become used to the idea of searching for information, and being the subject of searches ourselves. As such, a business model needs to be “permission-based”, he said, in order to foster trust.

Second guest speaker Tony Fish of AMF Ventures used the Marmite analogy (“you either love it or hate it”) to describe people’s attitudes to location-based services. As well as covering topics such as the “digital footprint” and data ownership, he also talked about localised advertising - how devices can pick up advertising texts pointing the user in the direction of a local product or service depending on where they are.
