15 December 2011 - Advocate-General Mengozzi has today delivered his Opinion on questions referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union in relation to the subsistence of database copyright in football fixture lists. This non-binding Opinion addresses the application of the Database Directive (Directive 96/9/EC) and argues that the Claimants' claim that database copyright subsists in the fixture lists for the Premier and other football leagues should be rejected.

07 December 2011 - The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has confirmed a European Commission decision from 2004 that found that proposed arrangements by Gibraltar for levying corporation tax constituted illegal state aid.
07 December 2011 - As is usually the case, the 51st Levy Scheme was agreed by the Levy Board in the final few hours of 31 October, the statutory deadline for agreeing a scheme. Neither the bookmakers nor racing would have wanted the scheme to be referred for determination by the Secretary of State, whose patience would have been tried even further following his need to intervene to settle the terms of the current 50th Scheme. The scheme proposed by the bookmakers was approved by a 4-3 majority with the three Government appointed members of the Board siding with the Chairman of the Bookmaker's Committee.

11 October 2011 - Last week's European Court judgment in relation to broadcasting Premier League football in pubs aroused a lot of controversy and comment, much of it misguided. The focus of the judgment is the limitation placed by EU law on attempts to ensure territorial exclusivity, i.e. whether a rights-holder can require its licensee in one EU country not to broadcast content into another EU country, and viewers' rights to receive broadcasts cross-border (Premier League matches broadcast by a Greek broadcaster in the case before the court).

21 September 2011 - With the 2012 Olympics in London less than a year away, the Government has proposed changes to the Gambling Act 2005 ("Act"), with the aim of preventing event-fixing at the Olympics. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport's Consultation proposes that various national and international sporting governing bodies, in particular the International Olympic Committee ("IOC"), be given greater ability under the Act to receive and share information with the Gambling Commission.
